Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Thighs Recipe (2)

This juicy and crispy Air Fryer Chicken Thighs recipe combines ease, speed, and flavor, perfect for busy days. This chicken is versatile enough to pair with any side, from soups to salads, and the best part is that it’s super quick, cooking in just about 20 minutes, making it a go-to option for a tasty, hassle-free dinner that everyone will love. The air fryer not only simplifies the cooking process but also makes it quicker, healthier, and more flavorsome.

Why We Love This Air Fryer Chicken Thighs Recipe

  • Efficient: The air fryer streamlines the cooking process, making it quick and hassle-free, perfect for busy schedules or last-minute meals.
  • Healthier Cooking Method: Air frying requires less oil than traditional frying methods, resulting in a lighter and less greasy dish without compromising on flavor.
  • Flavor-packed: The combination of spices like paprika, garlic powder, and herbs ensures that each bite of the chicken bursts with flavor and deliciousness.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Chicken Thighs: Bone-in, skin-on thighs are super-flavorful and are easy to cook without drying them out.
  • Oil: Olive oil is my favorite, but you could also use peanut oil, avocado oil, or any other neutral cooking oil that you like.
  • Herbs, Spices, and Seasonings: Garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano and thyme, salt, pepper, and paprika bring out the best in simple baked chicken.

  1. Prep the Chicken. Pat the chicken thighs dry with some clean paper towels.
  2. Season the Chicken. In a small bowl, combine the olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well, then rub the seasoning mixture all over the chicken thighs.
  3. Air-Fry the Chicken Thighs. Place the chicken thighs in the air fryer basket, skin side down. Lightly spritz the chicken with oil, and cook for 8 minutes. Flip the chicken thighs and cook for 8 to 10 more minutes or until done. Chicken is done when its internal temperature registers at 165˚F.
  4. Cool and Serve. Remove the chicken from the air fryer, and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Recipe Tips

  • Cooking Time: The exact cook time will depend on the size of your chicken thighs, so keep that in mind when cooking and always check for doneness before serving. The easiest and most accurate way to check for doneness is when you use a meat thermometer. Insert the thermometer deeply into the meat, but do not let it touch the bone, or the temperature won’t be accurate. If you don’t have a meat thermometer, you can test the chicken for doneness by cutting into the meat and pulling it away from the bone. If the meat comes away from the bone easily, and the juices run clear, the chicken is done.
  • Crispier Chicken: If you like your chicken crispier, just air-fry for an additional minute or two.
  • To avoid those extra 100+ calories, remove the skin before consuming, but not before cooking. Keeping the skin on while cooking is probably the best way to preserve flavor and moisture.

What to Serve with Chicken

Crispy chicken is good, but it really shines when you add my favorite salad, which is this Shopska (Macedonian Chopped Salad). This Creamy Asparagus Pasta Recipe is a comforting yet nutritious pasta dish that goes beautifully with chicken. My Garlic Rosemary Mashed Potatoes are excellent with almost anything, but chicken thighs are a perfect companion.

How to Store and Reheat Leftovers

  • Place leftovers in an airtight container and keep them in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days.
  • To freeze cooked chicken thighs, take the meat off the bone and pack it into a freezer bag. Press out as much air as possible before sealing, and keep it in the freezer for 3 to 4 months. Thaw before reheating.
  • To reheat the chicken thighs, just warm them in the oven at 350°F until heated through. You can also take the meat off the bone, and warm it on the stove, in a skillet over low to medium heat.

Instructions

  • Preheat Air Fryer to 400˚F.

  • Pat dry the chicken thighs with paper towels.

  • In a small mixing bowl, combine olive oil, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, thyme, salt, and pepper; mix until well incorporated.

  • Brush the seasoning rub all over the chicken thighs.

  • Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray.

  • Place the chicken thighs in the air fryer basket, skin side down. If the basket is too small for all four chicken thighs, you can cook them in batches.

  • Lightly spray the chicken thighs with cooking oil and cook for 8 minutes; flip the chicken thighs and continue to cook for 8 to 10 more minutes, or until the internal temperature of the chicken thighs registers at 165˚F. The exact cooking time will depend on the size of the chicken.

  • For crispier chicken, cook them a little longer, about 2 minutes.

  • Remove the chicken thighs from the air fryer and rest for 5 minutes before cutting and serving.

Notes

  • Preheat the Air Fryer for a few minutes before adding the chicken can help achieve a crispier skin.
  • For extra crispy skin, pat dry the chicken thighs before seasoning. Moisture can prevent the skin from crisping up.
  • Avoid overcrowding the basket; the thighs should not touch each other to ensure even cooking and crispiness. Please make sure to cook in batches if necessary.
  • Note that the size of the thighs can and will affect cooking time. Use a meat thermometer to check for doneness.
  • For crispier chicken, add another 1 to 2 minutes to the air fryer.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. For freezing, remove meat from the bone, store it in a freezer bag, and freeze for up to 4 months. Defrost before reheating.

FAQs

How do you crisp chicken in an air fryer? ›

Preheat the air fryer to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and let the fried chicken come to room temperature. Next, arrange the fried chicken in a single layer and cook it for about four minutes, flipping it once to ensure even cooking. Resist the urge to pile up fried chicken in the basket.

How do you make crispy batter in an air fryer? ›

To pull this off without a vat of boiling-hot oil, I decided to try a blend of flour, cornstarch, oil, and water to mimic the shell that forms when you batter and deep-fry vegetables. An equal amount of all-purpose flour and cornstarch provides both structure and crunch to the batter.

What is the trick to getting crispy chicken? ›

Double Dredge

The best way to ensure the breading will stay on the chicken is to double down on the flour. This creates a super thick, extra crispy coating on your chicken. After dredging the chicken in seasoned flour, dip it into an egg wash and place it back into the flour.

Why isn t my chicken getting crispy in the air fryer? ›

Dry the outside of the food properly before you add oil. Do not use too much oil, as this will make the food less crispy and more fattening. Meat or poultry can be lightly brushed with oil or marinated to get the crispiest results.

Does flour crisp in air fryer? ›

You bet! The flour coating gets amazingly crispy in the air fryer, so you get that satisfying crunch without the hassle of breadcrumbs. And the meat inside stays so wonderfully juicy and tender!

Should I bake or air crisp chicken? ›

The air fryer allows you to cut out excess oil while retaining ultra-crispy skin or delicious caramelization on chicken cuts. It's fast: Compared to an oven, chicken cooks quite efficiently in the air fryer. Typically, you'll shave off about 30 percent to 40 percent of the cooking time by using an air fryer.

Is it better to use wet or dry batter in an air fryer? ›

You also want to avoid putting food that has a wet batter, like corndogs or tempura shrimp, in air fryers. Wet batter goes everywhere, and without a proper oil bath the batter won't set, which means it won't be the crispy, fried item you hoped it would be, according to Polak.

What kind of breading do you use for an air fryer? ›

How to make breaded air fryer chicken breast. Traditionally, you can bread chicken by dredging it in flour, eggs and breadcrumbs. I made this a little healthier by skipping the flour and eggs. Instead I start with thinly sliced chicken breasts, spray them with olive oil, and then dredge them in seasoned breadcrumbs.

Should I use cornstarch or flour for crispy chicken? ›

When paired with all-purpose flour, cornstarch helps prevent gluten development, which makes the flour coating crispier, and absorb moisture (from the frying and the chicken), which also means a crispier coating. If you already have a favorite fried chicken recipe, try replacing a quarter of the flour with cornstarch.

What ingredient makes chicken skin crispy? ›

That trick is a sprinkling of baking powder, and it'll get you the crispiest, crackliest bites of fatty, salty skin imaginable, whether you're cooking just one thigh, a plate of wings, or an entire bird.

Why is my chicken thigh skin not crispy? ›

If you find the chicken thigh skin isn't as crispy as you would like, it could mean the skin may not have been dry before you added it to the oil.

Should I oil chicken before air frying? ›

Yes, it's often recommended to lightly coat food with oil before cooking it in an air fryer. This step helps to achieve a crispy, golden exterior that mimics the texture and taste of deep-frying. Here are a few tips on how to do this effectively: Use Minimal Oil: A light coating is all that's needed.

What is the best temperature to air fry chicken? ›

After testing a variety of temperatures, I found that 375 degrees F is the best temperature for air frying chicken. Because the air fryer uses convection heat, you do not need to set it as high as you would an oven (in a regular oven, 425 degrees F is best for baking chicken, like Bacon Wrapped Chicken Breast).

Does baking powder help crisp in air fryer? ›

These Air Fryer Chicken Wings only take a few minutes to make, but require one KEY ingredient – baking powder! The baking powder reacts with the chicken skin by raising its pH level to create beautiful golden brown and crispy skin. I hope you enjoy this recipe!

Why is my chicken dry in the air fryer? ›

The #1 tip for the best chicken breasts in an air fryer is: Don't overcook them! Chicken breasts should be cooked to 160°F, but if you cook them all the way to that temperature in the air fryer, carryover cooking will take them beyond that temp and cause them to dry out.

Can you crisp up cooked chicken? ›

Give the chicken a light spritz with cooking spray (this helps achieve the perfect crispy texture) and put the baking sheet in the oven to cook for 15 minutes, or until the skin feels hot and very crispy, Zapata says.

How to make chicken crispy without overcooking? ›

For baked chicken, consider starting with a hot oven (around 425-450°F) to crisp the skin quickly, then lowering the temperature to cook the meat through without drying it out.
