Oven Roasted Potatoes

Has to be one of those perfect side dishes. These potatoes are easy to make, these potatoes are seasoned perfectly, if you happen to have any leftover, they make the best leftover hash browned potatoes.

How to Roast Potatoes

You might be surprised at how easy it is to roast potatoes. This recipe uses Russet potatoes. So grab a few of them, give them a good wash, and then you will want to cut the potatoes into uniform cubes.

The real secret to cooking perfectly roasted potatoes is to cut all of the potatoes in a uniform size. When you cut all of the potatoes in one size, they will cook uniformly.

What Temperature to Roast Potatoes

You might be surprised the temperature range of roasting potatoes is a bit narrow. Anything below 350 degrees the insides of the potatoes dry out completely long before the outsides brown.

Cooking potatoes above 450 means the outsides can cook and burn leaving you with insides that aren’t quite done. Ideally, I like to roast potatoes between 375 to 425 degrees.

What’s the difference between baked and roasted potatoes

The main difference between these two recipes is baked potatoes require no additional fat to cook the potatoes. When you roast potatoes you will use a fat like olive oil, lard, or seasoned oil to cook the potatoes.

Lipton onion soup says 425 for 35 minutes. I’m trying it this way first so the potatoes don’t burn. I think 450 for 40 mini might give me charred pieces.

Used my own spice mix instead of the Lipton soup (only because I didn’t have Lipton). InTrying you reduce salt intake, it wasn’t “POW” but it was still super delicious

Sweet potatoes worked well. Boil for approx 30 min, cool, peel, then chop. I added gr pepper .. sauteed with onion and only 1/2 packet of onion soup mix. Since potatoes were now softened, only in oven for 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.

      • Stephanie

Great idea, I will have to give it a try.

I love roasted potatoes and I will try this, but with my homemade onion soup mix that costs WAY less. My way, for two people? Two medium potatoes, a teaspoon or two of my mix, plus red and yellow sweet peppers and fresh onions.

Soaking potatoes in water helps remove excess starch. Excess starch can inhibit the potatoes from cooking evenly as well as creating a gummy or sticky texture on the outside of your potatoes.

Why are my roast potatoes never crispy? ›

If roasted potatoes lack their crunchy sheen, overcrowding is usually the culprit. Just as overcrowding bacon or mushrooms in a saucepan causes disappointingly mushy results, placing potatoes too close to each other on a baking sheet will prevent them from crisping while they roast.

How do you keep roasted potatoes from getting soggy? ›

Here's a few ideas you could try:
  1. make sure they're completely dry.
  2. use more oil.
  3. open the oven door so that the moisture leaves the oven.
  4. use more heat, sometimes it's necessary (you could read it up in your oven's manual)
  5. use potatoes that have less flour / starch. Use waxy potato types such as anya or russett.

Neutral, low-cost oil such as vegetable oil, canola oil, safflower oil, peanut oil, corn oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, etc., work well for roasting. These oils have a high smoke point, allowing the potatoes to get very hot to achieve maximum crispiness.

Which fat is best for roasting potatoes? ›

Goose fat is one of the first choices for roast potatoes because first of all – it tastes nice! It has a really rich flavour compared to your more common vegetable oils. What does cornstarch do to potatoes? ›
