Seems like the older we get the more we hear about supplementing with Collagen. But what is it exactly and why do we need more of this protein?
What is Collagen
Collagen always refers to a prominentstructural proteinfound in ALL animals. It makes up about a third of the proteins found in our human bodies. I don’t know about you, but I feel that’s a third is a lot, so it must be pretty important.
Well and here’s the thing… it is really important!
Our Body’s Need For Collagen
You hear about it in almost all beauty products but it goes way deeper than just skin. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. It’s in our hair, nails, skin, bones, cartilage, tendons, muscles, blood vessels, our gut, and a part of the out layer of our vital organs.
By the time we hit 25 years old, our body starts to produce less and less collagen. Unfortunately, it is all part of aging. The absence of it doesn’t just cause wrinkles and saggy skin but it also contributes to a lot more of our body’s needs. And the lack of it can cause some pretty big health issues. Why Grass-Fed Gelatin
Gelatin is derived from collagen taken from animal body parts. It is brittle when dry (that’s the powdery stuff) and gummy when it’s wet. I know it doesn’t sound super fun… but to replace the loss of our collagen we need to replace it with the most natural sources out there.
Grass-fed is important because it is a higher quality product. The animals in which the gelatin came from, were raised under stricter standards. So this means, their bones, joints, and tendons are stronger and healthier and are just an overall better quality of collagen. And also, you’re not getting unwanted hormones and antibiotics they give animals that are not organic and grass-fed.
Here is my favorite product I use for my Grass-Fed Beef Gelatin, which is pasture-raised, grass-fed, non-GMO. Definitely the best bang for your buck!
Love Gummies
There are so many options with these gummies. I used stevia since it’s my sweetener of choice, but if you have another one go for it… just sweeten it to your liking. Also, try different flavors! I prefer lemon flavored and use Santa Cruz 100% Organic Pure Lemon Juicebecause it helps with liver filtration. Teas are another great option if you want to keep it sugar-free and still give your gummies a lot of flavors. All you do is steep some tea, any flavor, like raspberry or tangerine orange… or maybe even rose-flavored tea, and then just add 1/3 cup of tea instead of lemon juice.
If Gummies Aren’t Your Thing
If you aren’t super hip on eating gummies or making them, there are other options out there. Studies have shown that oral supplements have been just as effective as eating or drinking your collagen.
And since it’s getting a little colder out, you might want something warm to drink. Check out my recipe for homemade bone broth that you can make within 2 hours. Tons of health benefits!
