What You Should Know About Faucet Spouts Before Purchasing | Kingston Brass (2024)

While there are many features of the bathroom that need attention, when selecting a faucet the spout itself plays an important role. Since it’s the most visible part of the faucet, it makes sense to base the purchase of a new fixture on its design. Many homeowners purchase what they think is the perfect faucet, only to find the spout bumps against a wall or is too high for a certain sink. Make sure to consider all of these faucet spout measurements first.

Something else to consider is how do you normally use your sink? Do you like to wash our hair in the sink? Do you have small children that will be using the sink? These may be factors that will steer your selection one way or another.

Spout Reach

The first feature of a faucet to consider is its reach.

For a small bathroom sink a 4 to 8-inch spout reach is likely enough. Look for the faucet to reach at least the middle of the bowl, and preferably to be centered over the drain opening for the least amount of splashing and the biggest work area for washing.

Total Height

Height matters most for sinks that are installed under cabinets or other overhanging obstacles.

If a tall faucet is installed, it may hit the obstacles or become damaged over time. At the very least, it’s hard to appreciate the appearance of a high-end faucet when it’s tucked under a cabinet.

On the other hand if you have a vessel sink, you definitely need a faucet that is high enough to reach over the rim of the sink.

Measure the height of the space available and leave a few inches at least for head space to protect the faucet.

The distance between the tip of the spout and the top of the sink also matters. Faucets that are too high increase the likelihood of splashing, while low faucets make it hard to fit soapy heads or hands under the flow

Finally, don’t forget to consider the amount of space between the faucet and the wall behind it. It’s fine to install the faucet nearly flush with it, but close placement may impede the reach of the faucet on either side. For the tightest fit in a small space, consider a spout that has a small base, or awall-mounted faucetand a sink without a backsplash.
