Firefree Class A Technical
Firefree Class A has been rigorously tested at QAI Laboratories, an IAS-recognized fire testing laboratory & CALFIRE-approved testing Laboratory. The results demonstrate its exceptional fire-resistant properties. In a 10-minute ASTM E 84 (NFPA 255, UL 723) test, Firefree Class A achieved a Flame Spread Index of 25 with a less thickness of 6 mils or .006 inch and a Flame Spread Index of zero with a thickness of 10 mils (.010 inch), also meeting the requirement for a smoke-developed index of 30 (≤50) for use in air plenum spaces.
Extended testing for 30 minutes under ASTM E84 (NFPA 255, UL 723, Chapter 7A CBC) for Ignition Resistance showed remarkable results. Firefree Class A applied to various substrates, including engineered OSB and Douglas fir, achieved both an FSI (Flame Spread Index) and smoke-developed index (SDI) of zero at different thicknesses, indicating no significant progressive combustion. The coating also demonstrated minimal char damage, highlighting its ability to maintain the structural strength of materials in a fire situation.
It's important to note that while Firefree Class A has proven effective in laboratory tests, its performance in an actual fire may vary due to different conditions and the variability of fire tests. As a component of complete fire retardation systems, it contributes to slowing fire spread only where applied and does not prevent a fire from starting or continuing. The effectiveness of Firefree Class A in a particular fire will depend on factors such as the amount applied, the conditions of other assembly elements, and the actual fire conditions. It is crucial for the applicator to follow application directions and for the occupier to ensure the paint is in good condition for optimal fire safety.

Benefits of Our Firefree Class A Coatings
Meets All ASTM E-84 Requirements
FfA meets all ASTM requirements, which is the industry standard for noncombustibility and is utilized to rate fire-retardant-treated lumber. FfA is a paint for wooden surfaces that is listed & inspected by the ICC (International Code Council).
Most Economical Fire-Retardant Paint
Firefree Class A fire-retardant paint is highly cost-effective. Due to its superior fire-retardant properties, it requires only a thin layer, resulting in significant savings in material and labor costs—typically 35% or more—compared to other fire-retardant coatings.
Easy to Use and Apply
Firefree Class A is easy to use. It's a high-quality, nontoxic, water-based, fire-retardant paint with a smooth white finish. In many cases, FfA can be used without a primer, saving you money. You can apply this low-odor coating easily with a brush, roller, or sprayer.
High Performance
Firefree Class A is a cost-effective fire retardant coating. It slows fire spread and doesn't show significant combustion even in a 30-minute test. Wood treated with FfA maintains structural integrity with minimal char damage in wildfire situations.
Eco-friendly
Our coatings are safe and eco-friendly, with very low VOCs (less than 36 gr/liter), well below the current EPA rules and regulations of 250 gr per liter & even California’s limit of 50 gr per liter. Our product is extremely nonflammable and environmentally friendly.
Works on Various Materials
Firefree Class A is a paint that can be used on wood to make it noncombustible. It works on many types of combustible materials like oriented strand board (OSB), Douglas fir, plywood, and more. It's great for residential, multifamily, commercial, and industrial projects.
What People Ask Us?
Firefree Class A is a specialized, noncombustible paint formulated to enhance the fire resistance of various materials, particularly wood. It provides a protective barrier that significantly reduces the risk of ignition and spread of fire. This innovative product is designed to be applied to surfaces like oriented strand board (OSB), plywood, Douglas fir, dimensional lumber, wood paneling & sheathing, as well as associated lumber. Its ability to make these materials noncombustible makes it a valuable asset in fire protection for a wide range of applications.
Using Firefree Class A is straightforward. It can be applied like regular paint using standard painting equipment. Before application, ensure that the surface is clean, dry, and free of any contaminants. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the best results. Multiple coats are recommended for optimal fire protection.
Yes, Firefree Class A can be used in exterior applications, including for wildfire protection. However, when used outdoors, it should be covered by Firefree Exterior Topcoat (FfE) to ensure maximum durability and effectiveness. The combination of Firefree Class A and FfE provides enhanced protection against wildfires and other external fire threats.
Absolutely. Firefree Class A is well-suited for residential applications, offering an added layer of fire protection for homes and multifamily buildings. Its versatility and effectiveness make it a valuable choice for residential, commercial, and industrial projects where fire safety is a priority. By using Firefree Class A, you can significantly enhance the fire resistance of various surfaces, providing peace of mind and protection for occupants.
