Don’t forget the fun of camping in the backyard if you don’t have the time, money, or desire to go on a camping trip far away from home. Backyard camping is fun and easy on a budget. Here are a few of our family’s favorite tips for a successful backyard camping experience.
Build Memories by Camping at Home
Spending the night under the stars in your own backyard is a perfect introduction if you are new to camping or if you have little kids. It also means you have access to indoor plumbing.

Start by setting up a temporary campsite in your backyard. If you don’t have a large yard, a balcony or sun porch works too. The point is to get out in the fresh air without the hassle and expense of traveling to a more remote location.
Camping builds family memories because there aren’t as many distractions with screens or other household responsibilities. Unplug from technology and connect with nature and each other while you’re camping in your own yard. It’s also nice to teach your kids camping skills such as how to build a fire, set up a tent, or cook on a campfire while you’re still close to home in case things go awry.

Benefits of Backyard Camping
As I mentioned above, camping in your own yard is a good way to build family memories. it is also convenient, affordable, and safe. There is no need for expensive travel, lodging, and equipment rentals. You have access to your own bathroom, kitchen, and other amenities, which can be especially important for families with young children or those with specific needs. Finally, camping at home provides a low-stakes opportunity to try out camping before committing to a more involved and expensive camping trip. It also gives you a chance to try out new gear, recipes, or systems to use when you do take a longer and further away camping trip.
Plan Your Camping Trip
Once you have chosen a location for your backyard campsite, it’s time to start planning. Check your local weather and decide on the date and time of your campout. If you have family and friends in town, invite them to join you. Plan your meals and snacks, and decide which method you will use to cook. If you have children, involve them in the planning process by asking for their input on activities and meals.
Choose a Location
Before pitching your tent, consider factors such as safety, privacy, and comfort. Look for a flat, level area with good drainage and no sharp rocks or other objects. If you have neighbors nearby, take noise levels into consideration as well. Look for a location that is protected from wind and sun with access to shade.
Necessary Gear
When you’re in the backyard, you won’t need a lot of expensive camping gear. This is also a good way to try out new items, though, to make sure they will work for you on a longer trip. At a minimum, you will need:
- Tent
- Sleeping bags or other bedding
- Bug spray, sunscreen, first aid supplies
- Lanterns, flashlights or string light
- Portable stove or grill
- Cooler for food and drinks
- fire pit or ring (if you’re using)
- Games and activities
Backyard Camping Ideas for Families
Although being outside and unplugged is a treat all on its own, planning for backyard camping activities will increase your family bonding and memory-making. From s’mores to stories, here are my family’s favorite camping activities for a good time.
Campfire cooking
If you are able to have an open fire in your backyard, use this experience to teach others how to cook over a campfire (be sure you are following all safety measures and protocols). Use roasting sticks to make s’mores, roast marshmallows and hot dogs, or other camp food. Sinceyou’re close to home, this is also a good opportunity to try out new camping recipes.
Stargazing
No matter how many times I look up into the night sky, I’m always amazed at the massive expanse. Can you find common constellations such as Orion’s belt or the Big Dipper? How can you use the stars to navigate and find your way? Read stories with your kids to explain the folklore and mythology behind the constellations.
Outdoor Camping Games
Backyard games such as cornhole, horseshoes, frisbee, or badminton keep everyone entertained. My kids always loved the giant yard sets of classic games like Connect Four and Jenga. This game of themed camping charades is a blast! Can you create your own rules and make up a completely new game?
Storytelling
OOOOOHHHHH, spoooky. Tell ghost stories if your kids like to be a little freaked out. Otherwise, tell stories from your own childhood. My kids love to hear me talk about my own growing-up years. For creative storytelling, give a word or a phrase and everyone has to add a sentence to the story. Use a flashlight under your chin to add light effects during the scary stories.
Sing Campfire Songs
Teach your kids classic campfire songs or make up your own. When my kids were younger they loved singing action songs such as “Purple Stew”.
Scavenger Hunt
Kids of all ages love scavenger hunts. Leave them clues to find a prize at the end. For older kids, I love sending them on scavenger hunts with Polaroid pictures to find different things outdoors. Another favorite way to do a scavenger hunt in your backyard is with a compass. Teach your kids how to use compasses and then send them off on an adventure.
Backyard Movie Night
I know, when you’re on a backyard campout, you’re supposed to be off your screens. Setting up a projector outdoors and watching a family movie together is my one exception. We like to watch old comedy classics to get everyone laughing while we’re squished down in our sleeping bags.
Glow in the Dark
Bring glow sticks for a fun game of nighttime hide and seek. Glow sticks can also be used in the tent as a little nightlight or as accessories for a family dance off.
Backyard Camping Safety Tips
While backyard camping is generally safe, it’s important to take precautions to ensure a fun and experience for everyone.
- Fire safety: Always use a designated fire pit or ring and keep a bucket of water nearby in case of emergency. Only use firewood or charcoal to start your fire and never leave the fire unattended. Some city ordinances will prohibit open fires in your backyard, so check your local regulations first.
- Insects and wildlife: Be aware of the insects and wildlife in your area. Store food in sealed containers and dispose of trash properly to avoid attracting unwanted guests.
- First aid kit essentials: Although you’re camping in your backyard, take a first aid kit outside to your campsite. Keep it well-stocked in case of accidents or injuries. Basic items to include are band-aids, gauze, antiseptic wipes, and tweezers for removing splinters or ticks.
How Can I Camp at Home without a Yard?
If you don’t have a yard, don’t worry. The purpose of camping at home is to build memories, have fun, and get outside. Set up your campsite in your living room. Use blankets for a fort, or set up a tent if your room is big enough! Use air mattresses for more comfortable sleeping and have a family campout right in your living room. Go to the neighborhood park for nature walks, scavenger hunts and other camping games. Once you’re back home, tell ghost stories with the lights down low or play more board games. Don’t let the lack of a yard stop you from unplugging and unwinding wtih your family.
